Artist's Description

This picture is of a Canada Goose on the ice of the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that i made while bicycling on a relatively warm day in January 2014.

The Canada goose is a large wild goose species with a black head and neck, white cheeks, white under its chin, and a brown body. Native to arctic and temperate regions of North America. Its migration occasionally reaches northern Europe. The Canada goose is primarily herbivorous and normally migratory; it tends to be found on or close to fresh water.

Extremely successful at living in human-altered areas, Canada geese have proven able to establish breeding colonies in urban and cultivated areas, which provide food and few natural predators, and are well known as a common park species. Their success has led to them often being considered a pest species.

About Joyce Wasser

Joyce Wasser

I started taking photos a long time ago as a child with a hand me down old Kodak camera that took a 125 film cartridge. At first it was simply a means to record events, places and people, but now I find excitement in trekking, usually by bicycle, through cities, small towns, rural communities, abandon industrial sites and old buildings. I absorb the sights, sounds, smells and lighting of new places and try to capture their essence and communicate something of their majesty, mystery, memory, and drama. For me photography is a way to share the excitement and beauty of the world and express my own unique view of it. It's an art and a powerful communicator.
